Reading large numbers

Think about it

India's population is about 1,40,00,00,000. A news site writes it as 1.4 billion. Are they the same number? How would you read it aloud?

The idea

Large numbers are easier to read when we group digits. In the Indian system we group from the right as 3 digits, then 2, 2, 2: ones, thousands, lakhs, crores. Commas mark each group, and each group has a name you say aloud.

Place value names

NumberRead as

Activity · Try it at home

Find three big numbers around you: the price of a bike, a car's odometer, or your city's population. Write each with Indian commas and read it aloud to a family member.

Key takeaways

  • 1 lakh = 1,00,000 and 1 crore = 1,00,00,000
  • Commas make large numbers easy to read
  • Read each group with its place name
